CGST/SGST split applies to intra-state sales (the usual case at a retail counter). Inter-state sales charge the full rate as IGST instead.
Most allopathic medicines sold at a retail pharmacy fall under HSN 3004 ("medicaments in measured doses or retail packings") and attract 5% GST, as per the 56th GST Council (September 2025). The 5% is split on an intra-state invoice as 2.5% CGST + 2.5% SGST.
Common exceptions:
Ayurvedic, Unani, Siddha and homoeopathic medicaments are commonly taxed around 12%. Some medical devices and consumables (certain diagnostics, equipment, wellness items) attract 18%. A small notified list of life-saving drugs is taxed at 0%.
Remember that the printed MRP on a medicine strip is inclusive of all taxes — when you sell at MRP, GST is extracted from within that price, which is what the "Including GST" mode above computes.

HSN 3004 covers medicaments for therapeutic or prophylactic use put up in measured doses or retail packings — in practice, most tablets, capsules, syrups and injections at a retail counter. Under the current schedule, HSN 3004 items are generally taxed at 5%.
For an intra-state sale, the GST amount splits equally into CGST and SGST. Example: 5% on a ₹200 taxable value is ₹10 tax, invoiced as ₹5 CGST + ₹5 SGST. Inter-state sales charge the whole amount as IGST.
On the actual transaction value (selling price after discounts), not the printed MRP. MRP in India is tax-inclusive, so selling at MRP means the GST is extracted from within that price — use the "Including GST" mode above for that.
